Online text processing: transliteration, sorting, wrapping

Online text processing is a set of five small tools for jobs that keep coming back when you work with text: converting Serbian between the Latin and Cyrillic scripts, sorting lines, splitting and joining words, wrapping text and joining several lines into one. They work right in the browser, with nothing to install.

I built them between 2018 and 2020 for this website, as an example of a program that solves one specific task and nothing more. Each tool has one text box and one or two buttons, and the result is written back into the same box, ready to copy. The text you enter is not stored on the server and is not used for anything else.

Latin and Cyrillic transliteration

Enter Serbian text and press Convert. Text in Cyrillic is converted to Latin, and text in Latin to Cyrillic.

Sorting text

Enter words, phrases or sentences, one per line, and choose ascending or descending order. Lines are sorted by the alphabet of the page language.

Splitting and joining words

The tool splits a sentence into a list of words, one per line, or joins lines into one sentence. The character used to split or join is a space by default and can be changed, for example to a comma.

Wrapping text

The tool wraps text after a given number of characters. A line breaks only at a space between words, so no word is cut in half.

Joining text into one line

Text spread over several lines, for example copied from a PDF, is joined into a single line. A hyphen at the end of a line is removed, so a word split across two lines is put back together.

About the project

Transliteration, sorting, splitting and wrapping run on the server in PHP, so the result does not depend on the browser. Sorting follows the letter order of the page language, so letters with diacritics end up where they belong in the alphabet, not at the end of the list. Joining text into one line is JavaScript in the browser, because it does not need the server.

All the tools are available in English, Vietnamese and Serbian, in both the Latin and Cyrillic scripts. If you have an idea how to make them better, write to me.
